Focus WTV - Regionale Media MaatschappijRMM (Regionale Media Maatschappij), operator of the regional TV broadcaster Focus WTV and Picstory media productions, has been a long time Rambla customer, relying on us for transcoding and media delivery for its web tv channel kusttv.be and focus-wtv.tv.

Their online video workflow is a fine example of how a media company can deliver in-house created news stories almost instantaneously. Video editors simply drop a reportage in a transcoding hotfolder, after which our web services take care of encoding to several formats and creating thumbnails. As soon as the encoded media is ready for viewing, metadata is exported to the website's back-end and the content manager is notified he needs to complete the title and summary, and publish the item.

Earlier this year RMM launched a completely overhauled website, built and designed by Nascom and powered by the ubiquitous open source CMS Drupal.

For the video player RMM turned to Rambla, with a set of well-defined requirements: support for mobile devices and advertising pre-rolls, and easily embeddable on partner web sites.

The Rambla developers came up with a solution that is built around the well-known Jeroen Wijering FLV player, supporting both Flash based devices and platforms, as well as the latest generation of smartphones and tablets which have built-in support for HTML5 video. Video is delivered as a segmented HTTP stream, using Apple's HTTP Live Streaming protocol (commonly known as “HLS”). Quality of the stream adapts to bandwidth conditions, in a way that's completely transparent to the end-user.

Today, Belgian band Absynthe Minded is exclusively releasing the music video for Space, the first single from their new album As It Ever Was, to radio listeners Absynthe Minded - The Most Exclusive Video Everall over Europe. The video won't be on TV, neither will it be available via YouTube or any other music site. Moreover, you will only be able to watch the video while Space is actually playing on the radio.

Rambla was asked to work together with a host of companies to realize this concept, devised by mortierbrigade together with Absynthe Minded. The song is given a digital watermark (technology by Intrasonics) which is detected by an iPhone app (developed by Momads) as soon as Space starts playing on one of the participating radio stations. As a result, the video becomes available on the mostexclusivevideoever.com (designed by mortierbrigade, developed by Wijs).

To make sure that the video can be started just in time, Rambla developed a dedicated web-service which allows the site to remotely launch the video stream on our CDN. After the clip has finished playing, a making-off video is relayed until one of the participating radio stations starts playing the song again.

Red Bull Soundclash is set to land in Antwerp on Friday, where the Lotto Arena becomes a real arena in which Belgian rock band Triggerfinger goes up against the Dutch rappers of De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig. The event, described as an 'unparalleled live music conversation and performance between two Red Bull Soundclashmusical acts with diverse sounds, styles and creativity', is sold out, but the entire concert will be streamed live through the Humo website (the stream will also be available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices).

Rambla was asked to deliver the encoding and streaming solution for this event by Jet Import, Belgian importer of Red Bull and other top beverage brands, like we did last summer for the legendary Red Bull 'rooftop concert' by Triggerfinger on top of the MAS museum.

To watch the Red Bull Soundclash, tune into humo.be on Friday March 16 at 20:00 CET.

Possibly drawing inspiration from last year's successful Audi A7 campaign, Flemish media company "de Persgroep" invited Antwerp based graffiti artist Steve Locatelli to repeat his tour-de-force at Rock Werchter 2011. In the course of the 4-day festival, Locatelli is drawing festival-goers to the stand of newspaper "De Morgen" by spray-painting a fresh canvas each day. A few metres above their heads, a silent witness is capturing and broadcasting this ongoing artistic event to demorgen.be in a 4-day non-stop live stream.Werchter graffiti

For the setup and management of the live-stream, event agency Happy Few contacted Rambla. At the festival ground, we installed an Axis IP camera which captures video, encodes it into an H.264 video stream and broadcasts this stream to the Rambla CDN.

But since most of us are too time-pressed to linger for more than a few minutes watching the live stream, we were asked to handle the creation of a daily time-lapse movie which compresses the 12-hour live stream into just a few minutes. To this end, the camera posts snapshots every couple of seconds to the Rambla CDN. At the end of each festival day, thousands of still images gathered during the day are routed through the Rambla transcoding engine, resulting, only minutes later, in a caffeine-driven journey from blank canvas to finished work of art.

European Youth Film FestivalThe annual European Youth Film Festival takes place from March 5-13 in Antwerp and Bruges. This year, the festival decided to cooperate with Antwerp European Youth Capital and Bednet for a special series of webcasts. To give all children the opportunity to enjoy the festival, Saturday's opening event will be streamed live to a number of Flemish hospitals. Children are also given the opportunity to watch and assess the short films in competition, straight from their hospital bed.
